Be prepared to talk to your children about divorce the right way

Aug 19, 2019 | Family Law

When you have children but have to go through a divorce, it can be hard to bring up the topic with them. Fortunately, there is a lot of advice available on the best ways to do so.

Children can adjust to new situations, but it’s important for parents to be on the same page before they bring up divorce. You and your spouse should sit down together and discuss how you want to approach the topic and determine things such as custody arrangements beforehand when possible.

What should you do to tell your kids about your divorce?

Start by having a family meeting. You and your spouse should sit down with your kids together. Although you are separating, you should still have this discussion together to show that you are willing to work together for the sake of your children and that you are both in agreement about what’s happening.

Approach the topic in an age-appropriate way, and make sure you are prepared for questions. Younger children may be upset, but older children may ask questions about where they’ll live or if they’ll have to move. If you can, prepare to have those answers ready.

Finally, know that your children are going to need emotional support. Reaffirm that the divorce is not their fault and that you’ll both be there for them throughout the process. With everything changing, kids can be upset by the idea of losing their parents and routine, but if you’re prepared, you can help guide them through the divorce and help them adjust to everything that needs to change moving forward.
