Mediation could help you resolve your dispute

Nov 13, 2019 | Family Law

If you’re going through a dispute, one option is to try mediation. Whether you’re divorcing, having a dispute about child custody or are arguing over different factors, mediation could help.

Mediation involves a third-party mediator. It’s a nonbinding process that helps you and the other party involved in a dispute come to a resolution that you can both agree on.

What happens during a mediation session?

During the mediation session, you and the other party will come to one place with the mediator. During the meeting, you will both discuss your opinions and what you’d like to see happen to resolve the case.

The mediator is there to provide some guidance. They may be helpful in having you understand the other party’s point of view or in giving you more information about laws that could impact your case. The mediator is not there to dictate a decision or to make you agree to a resolution that you’re not happy with.

What happens if you come to an agreement?

Many people choose to have their attorneys with them during negotiations. If you come to an agreement with the other party, then your attorneys can draw up a contract or other binding paperwork.

What happens if you can’t come to an agreement?

If you can’t come to an agreement in the end, you’ll be able to move on to arbitration or go to court to resolve the case.
